O Projects

Red Lion borrows its name from a pub in Soho, London and conceived as a reflection on the location of the gallery space (above a pub in Fitzroy) and the collaborative nature of artist run spaces such as O Projects. For O Project’s premier exhibition Rendall and Spier decided to treat the space itself as a found material and to reflect on the physicality of it as a neglected, dilapidated room that is in the process of becoming an art gallery. The stark contrast between the aesthetic of the fresh white paint and that of the crumbling blue walls not only emphasizes the original space as a Duchampian ‘readymade’ but also makes a comment on the nature of paint, and of painting itself.
